| The Humane Society of Oldham County (HSOC) is humanely managing the colonies of feral (wild) cats in Oldham County by trapping, neutering or spaying, administering three year rabies vaccine, as well as any other medical attention they may need and releasing into the same location. We have volunteer foster families who take the non-feral cats and kittens from the colonies into their homes and provide shelter, food, water and socialization. We then place those cats into a good home. The cats who are too feral to be adopted are released back to the colony. They will enjoy a better quality of life and will not reproduce, thereby naturally reducing the population of the colony and stopping the perpetuation of this sad cycle. Statistics prove that this type of program, over a few years, can virtually eliminate the feral colonies. |

The HSOC also heavily promotes spay and neuter by hosting low cost clinics for those who cannot afford veterinary care. Animals that may never otherwise see a veterinarian are spayed or neutered and given their vaccine. The HSOC also pays to spay or neuter animals from the Oldham County Animal Control - a completely separate organization run by the county government - so that those animals become more attractive for adoption. The spay/neuter program is essential in stopping the pet overpopulation which directly relates to the many homeless and unwanted animals in our community. |
